One look at my website and Instagram, it's no secret that Superstition Mountain is a go to spot for me. While I am an elopement and adventure wedding photographer, I do take on family sessions, maternity photos and senior pictures when I can. Superstition Mountain is the perfect spot for these occasions and many others due to its rugged beauty and unique geological features.

What is Superstition Mountain?
This beautiful and majestic landmark is located in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, near Phoenix. It is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts of all kind; hiking, mountain biking, base jumping and more. For those who are interested in ghosts and mystery, there are several locations that are believed to be haunted or have mystical powers. The Lost Dutchman State Park is one such location, where legend has it that a rich gold mine is hidden somewhere in the mountain!

How do we get there?
There are two main ways in. One is through the aforementioned Lost Dutchman State Park. The other is my favorite and that is parking at N. First Waters Rd. just a quarter mile past the park's entrance. There will be places to park as soon as you turn on the road. This gives us the quickest access to my favorite spot at Jacob's Crosscut which sports a vast sea of cholla with the mountains in the backdrop. From when you park, you're just a little over a half mile away from this mesmerizing location.

When is the best time to take photos?
Time of day? As with any photos, sunrise and sunset is always the best. This allows for the most flattering light on not only the mountain itself, but more importantly YOU. That soft, warm glow will illuminate and compliment your skin tones while lighting up the beauty around you.
For time of year? This is Arizona. We get over 300 sunny days a year so you could just pick a day at random, and it would most definitely be a great day for photos. However, again, this IS Arizona, so it gets hot. Very hot. Especially in the summertime. So, if you're planning on booking sometime between May and August, be prepared for the heat. Speaking of which:

How should we prepare for our photos at Superstition Mountain?
Each session is different so after booking, I would provide as much info as needed to guide you through the process. From what to wear, what to bring, etc. There are a few things, though, that I would universally recommend, no matter what kind of session you book. I would recommend bringing comfortable shoes to hike in. Once we get to our spot, you can then slip on your nice, dress shoes if you plan on wearing some. I would also, ALWAYS, recommend bringing some water with you. I always bring many bottles of water with me just in case.

Why should we have our photos taken here?
The real question is why shouldn't you? I've been to this location many, many times and each time I go, I find something new. A cholla I hadn't seen before, a rock formation I hadn't noticed, each day the sun lights up the mountain different than the last. Always something new. I could come here every day for the rest of my life, and it will still take my breath away every time. I know your wedding, family, senior or maternity photos here will do the same too. So, what do you say? Get in touch with me and let's plan something together.
